At the new moon, growth work is key. We set intentions, rest, make plans, and do gentle work on kicking habits that no longer serve us. The new moon is the first spark in the dark. And a new moon in Pisces, in particular, brings a softer, dreamy, intuitive, and creative energy to our workings and rituals.

Pisces is the last zodiac sign before the cycle begins anew in Aries so it’s no surprise this is the new moon that precedes the Spring Equinox in the northern hemisphere. It’s also known as the mystic, the hierophant, of the zodiac, tapping into the unseen currents that eddy beneath everyday life. As it’s co-ruled by Jupiter and Neptune, here we are invited to get a little more woo-woo than with other signs as Pisces meanders in and out of reality.

As a water sign, Pisces touches on our emotions. Specifically on our sensitivity and compassion. Given the starry-eyed, spacey energy of Pisces swirling about us on this moon, it’ll be more difficult to focus on the small minutiae of our creative practices like we did during the Full Moon in Virgo. So below, I offer you five ways to tap into the new moon in Pisces:

Allow Yourself to Dream

Dreaming is not a waste of time. It’s often the first stage of creation. Pisces energy reminds us that every project begins as something half-formed and a little impossible. Ask yourself: What’s my heart’s true desire? What kind of story or project would feel magical to create? What creative world do I wish existed?

Don’t think about things like pricing, market research, social media performance, and such. Just allow yourself to dream how we used to before capitalism sucked a lot of joy out of creation. Under this New Moon, give yourself permission to think beyond business, practicality, or timelines.

Julia Cameron said it best in The Artist’s Way: “The need to be a great artist makes it hard to be an artist. The need to produce a great work of art makes it hard to produce any art at all.” So let yourself dream without all that other ish weighing you down.

Rest the Logical Mind

New Moons are for setting intentions and goals, but the dreamy, watery energy of Pisces can make being logical and analytical a bit difficult. Where other signs help us plan, edit, and organize, Pisces invites us to loosen our grip on logic and allow intuition to take the lead.

Give yourself permission this cycle to set looser, less precise goals. Not every creative phase needs to be productive or structured. Step away from rigid expectations. You don’t need to force clarity. When the logical mind is constantly running, it can crowd out quieter forms of insight. Sometimes the most important thing you can do for your creativity is simply to drift along with the flow.

Practice Self-Compassion

Many creatives forget to extend empathy and kindness toward themselves. If you’ve been feeling behind, discouraged, or creatively blocked, use this deeply empathetic Pisces new moon to give yourself a break and take stock of how far you’ve come.

As Pisces is the last sign in the zodiacal wheel, look back over the past year (from this new moon to last springtime) and take stock of how far you’ve come, what you’ve accomplished, and how you’ve grown and evolved as a creative person. How has the wheel transformed you?

As Campos says in her book Seasons of the Zodiac, “Pisces absorbs all the lessons from the previous zodiac seasons—all the wins, setbacks, confrontations, pleasures, hopes, and fears.”

What have you learned? Reflect and journal on it. Surrender what no longer serves you. Give yourself the compassion you’d give others. Trust that the next rotation of the wheel will be better.

Get Mystical

I’m a big believer that creativity is spiritual. This new moon is a wonderful moment to reconnect with whatever spiritual or woo-woo practices help you access your inner creative voice and help you feel safe as Pisces invites you to listen more closely to your intuition.

Try your hand at lucid dreaming. Do a tarot reading or some other divination. Ask for signs from the universe and pay attention to synchronicities. Journal. Tap into that archetypal “Muse” and see what she has for you. Work on your self-protection: wards, spiritual hygiene, and such. Meditate. Do some somatic yoga or movement. Write a few stream-of-consciousness pages.

Check Your Boundaries

Pisces is a sign that reminds us of the interconnectedness of all things. However, left unchecked, Pisces has a tendency to give too much of themselves or take on the feelings of others. Boundaries don’t block inspiration; they preserve it.

Ask yourself: Where am I oversharing personal information? Where am I carrying energy and burdens that are not mine? Where am I storing needless emotion in my body? How is my nervous system holding up?

Remember: your boundaries are not stipulations for others to follow. They are expectations you set on your own behaviour of what you’ll accept into your life and participate in. It’s you acting in accordance with your own values, not you attempting to control others.

The Pisces new moon invites us to soften our grip on certainty and reconnect with the deeper currents swirling beneath your creative life. Creativity is not only a craft; it’s also a Mystery. And I mean that with a capital M. The idea of “Mystery” in spirituality points to something very specific: the parts of reality that are meant to be experienced rather than explained.

I believe creativity is no different. It’s a craft, a skill, but it also has elements that resist explanation. And we can only experience these mysteries if we are open to them.
